Background of the Study

Health literacy is a critical determinant of health outcomes, influencing individuals’ ability to access, understand, and use health information to make informed decisions (WHO, 2024). Low health literacy is associated with poor health behaviors, increased hospital admissions, and higher mortality rates. Community outreach programs, particularly those led by nurses, have proven effective in addressing health literacy gaps, promoting disease prevention, and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices (Adeyemi & Musa, 2023).

In Kano State, low health literacy remains a significant public health challenge, particularly in rural and underserved communities where misinformation and cultural beliefs often hinder proper healthcare practices (Hassan & Usman, 2024). Nurse-led outreach programs have been introduced to educate the public on maternal and child health, infectious disease prevention, and chronic disease management. These programs involve community engagement through home visits, workshops, and mobile health services, ensuring that individuals receive accurate health information tailored to their needs.

While nurse-led community outreach programs have gained recognition, their effectiveness in improving health literacy in Kano State has not been extensively studied. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of these programs on public knowledge, health-seeking behaviors, and overall community health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Despite ongoing efforts to improve healthcare access in Kano State, low health literacy remains a barrier to achieving positive health outcomes. Many individuals lack essential knowledge about disease prevention, medication adherence, and available healthcare services. Nurse-led community outreach programs aim to bridge this gap, yet their impact on health literacy has not been systematically evaluated.

Without empirical data on their effectiveness, it is difficult to assess whether these programs should be expanded or modified for greater impact. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led community outreach programs in improving health literacy in Kano State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of nurse-led community outreach programs on public knowledge of health-related issues in Kano State.
  2. To evaluate the influence of these programs on health-seeking behaviors within the community.
  3. To identify the challenges faced in implementing nurse-led community outreach programs in Kano State.

Research Questions

  1. How do nurse-led community outreach programs impact public knowledge of health-related issues in Kano State?
  2. What is the effect of these programs on health-seeking behaviors within the community?
  3. What are the challenges associated with implementing nurse-led community outreach programs in Kano State?

Research Hypotheses

H₀: Nurse-led community outreach programs do not significantly improve public knowledge of health-related issues in Kano State.
H₁: Nurse-led community outreach programs significantly improve public knowledge of health-related issues in Kano State.

H₀: Nurse-led community outreach programs do not influence health-seeking behaviors within the community.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on nurse-led outreach programs in both rural and urban areas of Kano State. Limitations may include variations in program implementation, cultural barriers affecting community participation, and difficulties in measuring long-term health literacy improvements.
